The Crystal Ladies represent my cherished crystals, embodying qualities like protection and wisdom. They stand tall, celebrating the diversity of African American hair textures through various hairstyles. Inspired by South Ndebele culture, their elongated necks symbolize inner richness – self-awareness, resilience, and self-love. This fusion blends tradition with a personal narrative of self-discovery.
Created for the 2020 BLM: Storytime mural project in Cleveland, Ohio, the idea sparked a day before our concept presentation. Stumped on what to contribute, I looked at my bag of crystals and decided to turn them into empowering women, symbolizing the protection and wisdom these crystals provide.
